“Alright, we’ve been following the RIAA’s increasingly frequent affronts to privacy and free speech lately, and it’s about time we stopped merely bitching and moaning and did something about it. The RIAA has the power to shift public policy and to alter the direction of technology and the Internet for one reason and one reason alone: it’s totally loaded. Without their millions of dollars to throw at lawyers, the RIAA is toothless. They get their money from us, the consumers, and if we don’t like the way they’re behaving, we can let them know with our wallets.

With that in mind, Gizmodo is declaring the month of March Boycott the RIAA month. We want to get the word out to as many people as humanly possible that we can all send a message by refusing to buy any album put out by an RIAA label. Am I saying you should start pirating music? Not at all. You can continue to support the artists you enjoy and respect in a number of ways.” -Gizmodo

Music wants to be free

The music giants are trying DRM-free downloads. Lots of smaller labels already sell music that way. Having seen which way the wind is blowing, Mr Jobs now wants to be seen not as DRM’s defender, but as a consumer champion who helped in its downfall. Wouldn’t it lead to a surge in piracy? No, because most music is still sold unprotected on CDs, people wishing to steal music already can do so. Indeed, scrapping DRM would probably increase online-music sales by reducing confusion and incompatibility. With the leading online store, Apple would benefit most. Mr Jobs’s argument, in short, is transparently self-serving. It also happens to be right.

HomeSkillet Fest: LP3 album

Over the las few months LP3 aka Problem Child has been working on his EP. We spent a few hours before the show polishing off the tracks on his new album, which will be released through HomeSkillet Records. He had CD’s at HomeSkillet Fest and performed shortly after. More on that later.

RIAA Petition

Just because we love to hate the RIAA, EFF ( The Electronic Frontier Foundation ) is delivering signatures to send to Congress. It is really time we, as both fans and musicians, say no to this endless set of lawsuits.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is on a rampage, launching legal attacks against average Americans from coast to coast. Rather than working to create a rational, legal means by which its customers can take advantage of file-sharing technology and pay a fair price for the music they love, it has chosen to sue people like Brianna LaHara, a 12 year-old girl living in New York City public housing.

Brianna, and hundreds of other music fans like her, are being forced to pay thousands of dollars they do not have to settle RIAA-member lawsuits — supporting a business model that is anything but rational. This crusade is generating thousands of subpoenas and hundreds of lawsuits, but not a single penny for the artists that the RIAA claims to protect.

Copyright law shouldn’t make criminals out of 60 million Americans, and it’s time for a change. Tell Congress that it’s time to stop the madness!

W. Bush Steals Music

GW Bush’s iPod contains “illegal” (according to RIAA) music

In the video linked below, we see that President Bush’s iPod contains songs by the Beatles; since no Beatles songs have been licensed for the iTunes Music Store yet, these must have come from ripped CDs. Remember last February, when the RIAA told a federal agency that ripping CDs is illegal? I wonder if they’ll bring charges.

RIAA New Business Model

As most know, our opinion of the RIAA here at HomeSkillet Records is not so good. They continue to alienate fans, point fingers, and to sum it up: whine, whine, whine. While musicians making a money is a good thing, people who don’t make the music suing fans on the musician’s behalf is a bad thing. When is Bono going to denounce the RIAA? Until a few large name musicians realize that the RIAA’s short-term gain game plan is unhealthy for the industry, we will continue to see these ridiculous lawsuits.

Well at least they have a long-term plan for making money.

Downloading Music Doesn’t Hurt?

It’s been a been a last rallying cry of the music industry that sales have dropped due to “pirates” downloading illegal copies of music. While in some instances, this may be true, in others, it is found to be the entire opposite.

The Canadian RIAA has some different to say about it here

Here at HomeSkillet we realized the conclusions of this study long ago. If you enjoy the music you will support it. No longer are we (the consumers) going to purchase a CD with one hit song and 13 tracks of fluff. We want quality. We want to try before we buy.

RIAA Slap

It was a beautiful thing to see the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association of America ) get slapped down in court. An Oregon woman is the first to fight the RIAA, which in turn makes her the first to win. Hopefully in the long run we will see the power dissolve to everyone who makes music, not just the big Five.

Go have a beer, or buy 3 iTunes of Korey Calorie. Either way, you should be celebrating.
