Sonny Smith

Sonny Smith was brought to our attention via Amelia Budd, who was a big advocate of Sonny Smith music. And what do lucky HomeSkillet Fest volunteers get? A week with the artist! Sonny and his band members, Will and Garth, stayed with Amelia and Justin at their home on Marine Street. HomeSkillet Records pays in love.

Here is a photo of Sonny at HomeSkillet Fest on Saturday after he was all done playing music, that is, unless you count the late night radio sessions.

Sonny Smith played both Wednesday and Friday nights to a crowd of all too happy HomeSkillet Fest attendees. Ok, can you really be too happy? For me personally, HomeSkillet Fest always introduces new music, which soon becomes a part of my ever expanding library. Last year I was introduced to Common Market and Jake Labotz (who were up again). This year I have added an additional four to my “to listen to” pile.

Sonny’s music is very accessible. There is a whole lot more digging I have to do to really familiarize myself with his sound, but from what I heard in someone’s car and what I saw of his live show, it will be a treat.

An equally good time was spent with these guys going around Sitka and seeing the sites. I recently met up with Garth here in Portland to see see Luke’s show (yes, i am writing all this post festival, shame on me). I got to see Tyler Wood’s pictures and had a lot of face time with all those guys. The outcome was unanimous, they all loved Sitka and want to come back. I was so busy with other stuff, I wasn’t sure if these guys got to see what Sitka was about or not. Thanks to all who pitched in and volunteered, they did.

Check out Sonny’s website.
